BYC Sailing Fleets
The Bellingham Yacht Club has an active racing program. The BYC maintains membership in the PIYA Pacific International Yachting Association and US Sailing. These programs emphasize training and professionalism in sailing. US Sailing promotes and defines the racing rules of sailing, Olympic training, and many other programs, all BYC members should consider joining US Sailing to help the USA return to the top of the sailing world, there are many benefits and publications available on their site. Make sure to reference BYC on your membership application!
The Race Committee is a group of volunteers that make significant contributions to racing. Without this dedicated team the races would not happen. As a racer, or crew, consider volunteering a few times to assist with committee. You’ll learn how the courses are set up, the start timing sequences, how race results are calculated, and have the best view of the start. Anyone can volunteer to assist the committee, there are many positions like Committee Boat Operator, Mark Boat Driver, Timer, and Signaler. It’s a great time on the water weather you sail or not. Check out the publications by US Sailing on race management here (requires a US Sailing membership to access some areas of this site). The RC is made up of sailors and power boaters alike, they enjoy the camaradarie of the sport. Next time you see them, wave and say thank you.
This fleet is made up of Lasers, Bytes, 420’s, Scows and other one design dinghies. In 2005, this was the fastest growing fleet in the Pacific Northwest. The fleet is open to anyone with a desire to race dinghies. The Dinghy Fleet races almost every Tuesday night during the spring and summer season.
This fleet is made up of new and old racers. Participants need to register with the club prior to events, and maintain a vaild handicap certificate with the PHRF – Pacific Handicap Racing Fleet. The fleet participates in regattas around the region, long distance and overnight races, and competitive match racing with other clubs. If you would like to get started, contact the club, or come down to the club after racing on Wednesday nights, introduce yourself and strike up some conversation, there are plenty of opportunities for crew members and new boats alike. Wednesdays after racing the club is open to members, guests, and crew members with a valid BYC crew card.
The Bellingham Yacht Club (BYC) offers youth sailing classes as a not for profit and self-supported community boating program. The Youth Sailing Program is very active and includes summer sailing and racing classes taught by US Sailing certified instructors, weekly dinghy racing, a Youth Club which sponsors many social activities and a youth fun room with a pool table, ping pong table, electric darts, air hockey table and a Foosball table. For youths interested in racing at the high school level, BYC is the primary sponsor of the Whatcom Community High School Sailing Team formed in 2008.
